How Therapy Helps

Therapy offers a structured, supportive space to understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours—and to develop practical tools for change. Together, we explore what’s keeping you stuck and build strategies that help you move forward with confidence.

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychological therapy that helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It focuses on identifying unhelpful patterns, developing practical coping strategies, and building skills that support long-term wellbeing. CBT is structured, collaborative, and goal-oriented, meaning we work together to understand what’s keeping you stuck and find ways to move forward.

CBT is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) for many common mental health difficulties, including anxiety disorders, depression, low self-esteem, and difficulties linked to long-term health conditions. Research consistently shows that CBT can be highly effective in helping people make meaningful and lasting changes.

While CBT is a strong fit for many people, it isn’t always the most suitable approach for every situation. It may not be the best option for bereavement, relationship or interpersonal difficulties, or when someone is seeking open-ended exploratory therapy. At this time, I’m also unable to accept new clients with a diagnosed Personality Disorder. If you’re unsure whether CBT is right for you, we can explore this together in an initial consultation to ensure you receive the type of support that best fits your needs and goals.

What to Expect:

Sessions are collaborative and focused on your goals. We work at a pace that feels manageable, using evidence-based techniques to help you understand patterns, develop new skills, and build resilience.

Session Format:

Online. 1 hour. Weekly or fortnightly. Short or Long-term depending on goals.

Testimonials

“Alexandra was everything I hoped a therapist would be and made me feel comfortable immediately. I found her to be professional and knowledgeable along with kind and understanding; always guiding me in the right direction and seemed quite intuitive as to what would help me and when. I feel I have learnt a lot from Alexandra about how to manage not just life situations but the emotions that come with them too. I also found it very helpful to address the fact that there will be bumps in the road and how to deal with them when they arise.”

Client suffering from Anxiety and Depression

"My CBT sessions with Alexandra Haynes were constructive and effective, and at the same time it felt more like chatting to a good friend. She was excellent at reading me and spotting my dysfunctional thoughts. She listened to my traumas, guided me through tasks and helped me get back to living a full life again. Thank you, I have gained so much insight and learned skills that will help me for the rest of my life.”

"I would just like to thank you kindly for all of your support that you gave me. Thank you for listening and being there when I needed help. Thank you for showing great kindness, understanding and empathy. You are the best therapist ever! It is huge that you actually got me! You listened you understood you got it! Thank you for not labelling me too sensitive! Or treating me like a problem that just needs to gone cause I don’t fit the narrative. But giving me some light! ...It felt amazing to be able to actually trust you! I will always be grateful for that.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a diagnosis?

No—many people come simply because they feel stuck or overwhelmed.

Will online therapy feel strange?

It’s very common to wonder about this. Since COVID, a large body of research has shown that online therapy is just as effective as in-person sessions. Many people also find it more comfortable and convenient, with no travel time, parking worries, or added costs. Most clients settle into the online format quickly and feel just as connected and supported as they would face-to-face.

What happens in the first session?

The first session is a chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll explore what’s brought you to therapy, what you’d like to change, and whether CBT feels like the right approach. There’s no pressure to share anything before you’re ready.

How long will therapy take?

The length of therapy varies depending on your goals and the difficulties you’re experiencing. CBT is often a short-term therapy, but some people benefit from longer-term support. We review progress together so the pace feels right for you.

What will I need for online sessions?

Online therapy is easy to access. You can use a smartphone, tablet, or laptop, and all you’ll need is an email address so I can send you a secure video link. When it’s time for your session, you simply click the link and you’ll be welcomed into the virtual room with me.

Do I need to prepare anything before starting therapy?

You don’t need to prepare anything in advance. Some people find it helpful to think about what they’d like to focus on, but this is optional. We’ll work things out together at a pace that feels comfortable.

Will I have to do ‘homework’?

CBT often includes small tasks between sessions to help you practise new skills in everyday life. These are always agreed collaboratively and tailored to what feels manageable and meaningful for you.

Is everything I say confidential?

Yes. What you share in therapy is confidential. The only exceptions are rare situations where there is a risk of harm, in which case I would discuss this with you and follow professional guidelines.

What if I’m not sure CBT is right for me?

It’s completely okay to feel unsure. We can explore this together in your initial consultation. If another type of support would be more suitable, I’ll be honest about that and help you think through your options.

Can I switch to in-person sessions later?

If you offer in-person sessions: Yes, if availability allows. We can discuss what format feels most comfortable and practical for you. If you offer online only: At the moment, sessions are offered online only. Many clients find this flexible, accessible, and just as effective as in-person therapy.

What if I need to cancel a session?

Life happens. I just ask for as much notice as possible so the appointment can be offered to someone else. Your confirmation email will include the cancellation policy
